March Memories

Here are a few pictures that capture our day to day adventures this month. Enjoy!
No more winter coat, bring on the spring fleece!
This is the third winter hat that I have officially lost since arriving in China. They always disappear in the minivan. I knew someday there would be a real reason I hated minivans.

The first day with no coat!

This odd swing actually ended up being perfect. Who knew a flat tire on chains would be a such a good time?

Steve skiing outside Beijing with his friends.

Maeve has a new thing where she empties out closets so that she can sit inside them. This is how I found her on the day I took this picture. Normally when it's a closet she throws open the doors to "surprise" me but this was our first encounter in the kitchen. This time the doors didn't open. I heard the sound of crinkling plastic. I call her name. Nothing. I open the door. She has nothing in her hands but she's chewing on something. The culprit? Forbidden Cheez-its that are only for her dad and special occasions. I guess she figured if she couldn't see me I couldn't see her!

First and only snow of the season. It was probably only a half an inch and melted by the end of the day. Those people in the picture are golfers on the golf course outside our window. They even golf in the rain, it's very odd. Oh, and all the caddies are women. Every single one.
I often see people making themselves at home in stores... At Ikea people are frequently sleeping in the beds and at this furniture store at the mall a family is actually eating lunch in the mock dining room. I took this picture though the mock front window...Hilarious.
Making St. Patrick's day cookies with her friends Joseph and Lilah.  Maeve only cared about eating the cookies, she takes after her mom like that.
I have attempted to give Maeve peanut butter on several occasions and she never likes it. On this day she changed her mind :-)
We found a Gap and an H&M in Tianjin. Other than our trip to Singapore this is the first time we'd found a store that we would normally shop at in the U.S. I almost shed a tear. Clearly I had to buy a few things.
A Gator, China style.
People praying at a shrine in Tianjin. Those are lit incense sticks.

A walk-up McDonalds, there's no indoor seating. These are fairly common in major shopping areas. I've only seen a drive-through once since we've been here. This one in particular just serves icecream.

The Water Cube in Beijing where the 2008 Olympic swimming events were held.  It's hard to grasp how tall the diving platforms are until you see that the highest seat isn't even as tall as the highest platform.

They converted part of the Cube into the most amazing indoor waterpark. This is part of the toddler section.

This is the rest of it. There are 32 slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool.  Pure indoor heaven.
Maeve was even having such a good time that she allowed us to put her eartube band on.
This is an indoor slide that she'd never been on. She wanted to go down by herself. I wish I could have captured the gasp of all the old grandmothers that were watching and commenting in horror. A good mom probably wouldn't have let her do this, especially since I wanted to take a picture and therefore wasn't at the bottom of the slide either.
